Why not have some class Tiger? Tom Watson had "some words" for Tiger Woods.
In an interview with Kansas City's NBC affiliate, Watson spoke of Woods' taste for extramarital flings as "bad for our game" and "something he needs to get control of." He was also not fond of Tiger's well-known temper tantrums.
"His swearing and his club throwing, should, that should end," Watson said. "That’s not part of what we want to project as far as the professional golf tour is concerned."
Tom Watson, one of golfing legends, is on the level just below Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. He could be offering the saged advice for Tiger a father would give. Woods apparently never received this advice since his own father favored extramarital activities.
Some say Watson is old. Golf is in many ways an old man's game. Times have changed and Tiger Woods grew up in an era in sports where showing emotion and frustration outwardly is OK. Watson grew up in an era where it wasn't.
If this thinking is true, I question whether times have changed for the better. Does this say that crass behavior is so acceptable that it is the norm? Yes I think so. Where is the class instead of the gross?
Will a public apology to golfing fans and eliminating the on-course childish temper tantrums help Tiger Woods gain his following and sponsorships back? I again say yes.
Do people who share Watson's feelings not Woods' fans even before his marital problems surfaced? Maybe, but to use this as an excuse just doesn't cut it. This is not high school, remember this is a game for old men with class.
